Curriculum Your Med/Peds residency at LSU is comprised of 24 months each of internal medicine and pediatrics, divided into four month blocks. Every four months, half of the residents in the program switch from medicine to pediatrics rotations, and the other half visa versa. Residents transition from interns to upper-level or supervisory residents after sixteen months in the program, or after completing eight months of training in both medicine and pediatrics.
Our Med/Peds program is well integrated into both the categorical Internal Medicine and Pediatrics programs. Our residents receive the full benefits of each categorical program yet also maintain identity as Med/Peds physicians. Our residents' specialized yet comprehensive traning is well respected by their categorical peers. Bi-monthly meetings devoted to Med/Peds residents afford our residents opportunities to discuss topics unique to Med/Peds. Internal Medicine More than 40% of internal medicine rotations consist of ambulatory experiences. Of the required 24 months of internal medicine, 9 are general medicine wards months.
Residents have the option of doing more ward rotations if desired, and there is a Hopitalist Track for residents interested in hospitalist medicine. Furthermore, upper-level residents may rotate on General Medicine Consults (GMC), a inpatient consulting service used primarily by surgical subspecialty teams. There is also an Ambulatory Track for residents who want to further emphasize training in outpatient medicine.
Additional core rotations include ER, MICU, Heme/Onc, and Geriatrics. Electives include Cardiology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology, and Endocrinology. Pediatrics The mix of inpatient/outpatient rotations in pediatrics is about 60/40%. Inpatient rotations consist of General Pediatrics Wards, Heme/Onc Wards, GI/Neurology Wards, Pediatric ER, NICU, PICU, and Well Baby Nursery. Electives which offer a 50/50% mix of inpatient/outpatient include Cardiology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, and Endocrinology.
Additional electives include Infectious Diseases (primarily inpatient), Allergy & Immunology (primarily outpatient), and Rheumatology (mix). Core outpatient rotations include Developmental Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, and a Community Rotation for experience with advocacy and child abuse as well as free clinics in the community. Med/Peds residents are also allowed to design an ambulatory rotation to bolster experience in the outpatient setting, which may include working with local private physicians. Two Individualized Educational Units (IEUs) allow additional customization including time for research. Med/Peds Ambulatory Rotation Both interns and residents rotate through a combined Med/Peds ambulatory elective twice during their four-year residency, usually during the first and fourth years. During this rotation, residents attend a variety of clinics staffed by Medicine, Pediatrics, and Med/Peds faculty highlighting outpatient care in both private and public clinic settings.
Residents spend a lot of time in the Med/Peds Clinic. Additionally, residents may pursue specific subspecialty experiences in the LSU Medicine and Pediatric ambulatory clinics according to interest. Briggs stratton 300 series engine manual.
